Girl Reading by Ikunosuke Shirataki, Oil on Board "Japan Circa 1940"

Wonderful oil on board by this much awarded artist. Painted around 1940 showing a Japanese girl reading in traditional dress. Measures 52 cm x 40 cm in restored artesian frame signed lower right.     SHIRATAKI IKUNOSUKE 1873-1961 Born in Hyogo Prefecture, Shirataki studied plein-air painting with Yamamoto Hosui and Kuroda Seiki at their private school in Tokyo, the Tenshin Dojo, and at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, graduating in 1898. He exhibited with the art society Hakubakai for several years, then traveled to Europe and America from 1904 to 1910. For the remainder of his career, Shirataki promoted Western-style oil painting in Japan, garnering several important prizes before his death in 1961.
